Community Day

Saturday, March 07, 2015, 1-5:30 p.m.
Marguerite's Place, 170 Cashin Ave. Ext, St. John's

Swerf and Terf: Examining the Political Agenda of the Rescue Industry with Morgan Page. Drawing on personal experience as a former underage trans sex worker, and a body of academic research, Page will wade through the murky waters of sensationalism, neo-Liberal foreign aid policy and the effects of second wave radical feminism on the creation and maintenance of the anti-trafficking movement. Tracing its history from the post-emancipation white slavery panic to today's live-tweeted brothel raids in the developing world, we will examine how this industry operates and whom it profits.

To be followed by a conversational exploration of topics including sex workers’ agency and rights, myths and realities of human trafficking, youth experiences and perspectives, and more with Dr. Emily van der Meulen, Department of Criminology, Ryerson University, Toronto.

Followed by a community panel on the St. John’s context with Laura Winter (SHOP co-ordinator), Dr. Kelly Monaghan, and more.

Finishing with: Where do we go from here? A group discussion on the future of sex work in Canada.
