Impact of Foraging Conditions on the Family Lives of Common Murres and Atlantic Puffins

Dr. Anne Storey (Department of Psychology, Memorial University) will talk about common murres and Atlantic puffins. Both are long-lived diving seabirds that work hard to provide for their single chick. In both species, the two parents contribute equally to this care. Murres nest on open cliffs with parents alternating between guarding the chick and foraging. Atlantic puffins nest in the safety of burrows and parents can leave the chick to forage simultaneously, so parents rarely see each other. Dr. Storey will talk about these different family life styles and describe how parents co-ordinate taking care of their chick. She will also talk about how food availability plays a role in this dynamic.
