The Iceman Returns to Labrador

Description: Imagine being dropped by a helicopter into the bone-chilling cold, hauling 275 pounds of gear in a sled over 600 kilometres of barren tundra. Jerry Kobalenko doesn't just imagine it. He has crossed Labrador twice and completed 19 expeditions on Ellesmere Island. Recently, he returned to Labrador 20 years after his first solo midwinter expedition there to see if experience would help him complete a trek that had taxed him as a young man. He will share photographs and stories from that adventure when he gives this talk on behalf of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society. No admission, but donations to the RCGS appreciated.

The Daughters of Eve in Newfoundland: Genomic Research on Human Biodiversity

Description: Dr. Steven Carr, Biology, will speak about recent work on the genomics (the science of complete gene sets) of the emergence of the human species “Out of Africa” from a recent common ancestor (the “Mitochondrial Eve”), and how the “Daughters of Eve” have spread across the world, including their arrival in Newfoundland. He will describe the work in his lab on documenting patterns of genomic diversity among Newfoundlanders, and how the new biotechnologies of genomics provide powerful tools for the investigation of the genealogy of Newfoundlanders.

Cognitive Science Lecture Series: The Math Plague

Softball, Hardball: An Examination of Masculinity in Sport

Men are both subjects and agents in the construction of multiple and competing masculinities within and between groups in various social contexts. This has real consequences for men and women in terms of prestige, status and access to resources. The numerous ways that social inequalities are negotiated, emphasized, or downplayed by men at work, in family relationships and through participation in leisure activities are explored through a preliminary sketch of the sports of softball in Newfoundland and cricket in Jamaica. The presenter will examine how potential conflicts and contradictions are negotiated, negated, and/or reinforced.

Seventh Annual Potato Festival at the Garden

Location: Botanical Garden, Mount Scio Road
Description: Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy: potato peeling contests; displays and information on potato varieties, gardening, and growing tips; a potato tasting booth; children's activities; as well as soils and composting demonstrations. At 11 a.m. compost championship awards will be presented to children who participated in the 2006 Junior Naturalist Camp program. Without a doubt, the highlight of the day will be the Jiggs dinner, prepared by the Community Food Sharing Association and available between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., while quantities last. Admission is by a food donation. All proceeds for the day go to the Community Food Sharing Association and the Garden's childrens education programs.
