Potential Memorial law school moves into proposal stage

By Janet Harron | March 19, 2014

At a recent luncheon congratulating Memorial students who have received legal research awards from the Law Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, Dr. Lynne Phillips, dean of the Faculty of Arts, delivered a brief update on a future law school at Memorial.

The 2013 law school feasibility study was delivered to President Gary Kachanoski in December 2013 with a unanimous recommendation from the seven committee members that Memorial University consider establishing a law school.

According to Dr. Phillips, the next step of the process is the proposal phase where a number of issues including curriculum, student recruitment, costs and potential joint programs will be looked at in greater detail.

This proposal phase will be undertaken by an internal Memorial committee comprised of Ann Browne (associate vice-president, Facilities Management), Dr. Wilfred Zerbe (dean, Faculty of Business Administration), Dr. Noreen Golfman (dean, School of Graduate Studies), Dr. Phillips, Karen Kennedy (internal consultant, Office of the Provost) and Janet Harron (communications coordinator, Faculty of Arts).

“The current plan is for this committee to listen to ideas for collaboration within our multi-campus university, fine-tune just what a Memorial law school will look like, and determine how we can make it happen,” said Dr. Phillips. “I look forward to working with the new committee and hearing from all Memorial stakeholders.”
