The Travelling Republic celebrating N.L. spirit

By Melanie Callahan | July 18, 2014

The Travelling Republic, a collaborative project involving artists Ingrid Mary Percy, Gerri Lynn Mackey and the late Colette Urban, has been bringing some east coast culture to Canada’s west coast.

Ms. Percy is a faculty member with Grenfell Campus's Division of Fine Arts, Ms. Mackey is an alumna of the fine arts program and Ms. Urban taught at Grenfell in the 1990s.

On Discovery Day, June 21, The Travelling Republic, joined by Dame Mailarta, also a Grenfell fine arts alum, paraded through the streets of Victoria, B.C., sporting a Newfoundland and Labrador flag and ugly stick while Ms. Mackey played her signature tuba. Following the parade, Ms. Mackey entertained onlookers by using her hair to paint a picture of the province’s legislature building.

The Travelling Republic opened a multimedia show June 27 at Open Space, an artist-run gallery in Victoria. The exhibit included the screening of Pretend Not to See Me and the art of Colette Urban. The exhibit will continue until July 26.

On July 19, Ms. Percy will be hosting an Ugly Stick Workshop for an expected 35,000 visitors at the Annual TD Art Gallery of Greater Victoria Paint-In.
