Olé! Grenfell Campus adds Spanish to second-language offerings

By Pamela Gill | July 18, 2014

Grenfell Campus students will now have two languages to choose from when considering second language course requirements.

Spanish 1000 is now available to students registering for the fall 2014 semester.

In addition to simply diversifying course options, this move is in direct support of exchange agreements that have recently been signed between Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, and a number of universities, colleges and institutes where Spanish is the first language.

Since April 2014, Grenfell Campus has signed co-operating agreements with institutions such as the University of Costa Rica, the National University of Costa Rica, the Technological University of Costa Rica and the Latin American University of Science and Technology. These agreements create exchange opportunities for Grenfell Campus students, faculty and staff.

In addition, Grenfell has collaborations in place with many other Spanish-speaking universities and regions, including new and existing relationships with institutions in Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia, Uruguay and Spain, just to name a few.

“Furthermore, the Spanish lessons would also assist anyone who wished to travel in those countries, or spend a research sabbatical there, even if they did not go on an educational exchange,” said Dr. Ivan Emke, facilitator for internationalization at Grenfell Campus. “It’s my hope as well that some people will take the class out of a more general interest. And, of course, it can be used as a second language credit in a number of programs.”

Spanish 1000 (Elementary Spanish I) will be offered in slot 061 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7-8:15 p.m., pending sufficient enrolment.
