Orientation 2014 setting the stage for success at Grenfell Campus

By Melanie Callahan | Aug. 26, 2014

Orientation 2014 is Grenfell Campus’s way of welcoming new students to the campus community and setting the stage for first-year students to become graduates.

Orientation 2014 (#getgrenfelled on Twitter) is a semester-long process that began in June with Parents’ Orientation and continues next week, and into the months following.

“Our orientation activities will introduce students to services and resources available to them,” said Kimberly Noseworthy, orientation co-ordinator. “The hope is that they make connections with other new students and feel like they are being welcomed to the Grenfell community.”

Orientation 2014 will continue with a student webinar scheduled for Monday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m.

In the following weeks, orientation programming will continue so that students feel supported and embraced as they navigate their first year.  In order for students to integrate into university life, Orientation 2014 will include a Get to Know Your Prof event, where professors introduce who they are and what they do in five minutes, a campus-wide classroom-finding event and an outdoor dance party at Marble Mountain. A Rocket Rocketship concert is also scheduled for Sept. 1 at the GSCU Backlot. In addition, a second Parents’ Orientation and academic advising sessions have been been planned. A public outdoor Zumba class is taking place on Friday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m at Margaret Bowater Park.

“Orientation 2014 is designed to make students fall in love with Grenfell and make it their only stop for four years of university,” said Dr. Matthew Janes, director, Student Services. “Since we now offer 19 degree programs, there are lots of choices for students, and Grenfell is the campus of choice since we offer an affordable, quality education with low student-professor ratios and targeted supports for students.”

In addition, a specific orientation has been scheduled for international students which includes sessions on health insurance, dealing with culture shock, community information and tips to help them adjust to their new academic and community surroundings.
