Region’s top university teachers recognized in St. John’s

The Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) recognized the recipients of the AAU’s regional awards for excellence in teaching and educational leadership during a meeting of the AAU Council on Sept. 30.

Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor, Memorial University, presented the teaching awards during the AAU Council luncheon on Memorial's St. John’s campus.

The three AAU Teaching Award recipients for 2014 are Dr. Ann Braithwaite, Department of Diversity and Social Justice, University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, PEI; Dr. Martin Kutnowski, Department of Fine Arts, St. Thomas University, Fredericton, N.B.; and Dr. Peter MacIntyre, Department of Psychology, Cape Breton University, Sydney, N.S.

AAU member universities are invited to submit nominations for the Teaching Awards Program. The recipients are selected by the AAUs Co-ordinating Committee on Faculty Development.

Dr. Martin Kutnowski and Dr. Peter MacIntyre will each receive the Distinguished Teaching Award recognizing outstanding teaching over a number of years.

Dr. Ann Braithwaite will receive the Anne Marie MacKinnon Educational Leadership Award for a demonstrated commitment to the improvement of university teaching.

The AAU (www.atlanticuniversities.ca) represents the 16 universities in Atlantic Canada and the University of the West Indies. The AAU is an advocate for the important role Atlantic universities play in preparing future leaders of our communities, in path-breaking research and innovation and in contributing to the economic prosperity and quality of life of the Atlantic region.

The AAU held its council meetings on the St. John’s campus Sept. 29-30.
