Civil ceremony: Engineering alumni return for wedding photos

A pair of engineering grads came back to the spot where it all began for them recently.

George Michelin and Rebecca Manuel – both 2011 civil engineering graduates – tied the knot on Dec. 20. When it came to choosing a location for their wedding photos, it was a no brainer: the St. John’s campus topped their list.

Memorial graduates George Michelin and Rebecca Manuel came back to campus for their wedding photos.“We were in the same year of studies and met during our classes,” said Ms. Manuel, who is from St. John’s; her husband is originally from Happy Valley-Goose Bay. “We made a lot of great friends while at Memorial so we thought it would be fun for us – and for them – to see some wedding photos taken there. We took photos in our old classroom and in the Engineering building where we met and spent a lot of time studying.”

The pair says Memorial was an obvious choice because it’s where their roots began as a couple.

“Memorial is very important to us personally because it is where we met each other," said Ms. Manuel. "It is also important to us professionally because it is where we received our degrees."

Married at St. John’s-based Winterholme – a heritage inn – the couple kept their nuptials small with about 14 family members in attendance. After a honeymoon that took them to Germany, Czech Republic and The Netherlands, they are now settling into married life and work.

Ms. Manuel works as an engineer in training in the structural department at Amec Foster Wheeler in St. John's; Mr. Michelin works as a civil engineer in training at Pinnacle Engineering in St. John's. Both are currently working towards their professional engineering designation.
