Interim associate vice-president (academic), faculty affairs appointed

Dr. Sean CadiganDr. Sean Cadigan has been appointed associate vice-president (academic), faculty affairs, pro tempore. The appointment is effective May 4, and was approved by the Board of Regents on March 12.

Dr. Cadigan is an accomplished historian and author, and has been a professor in Memorial’s Department of History since 2001. He previously served as head of the history department and director of the master of employment relations program, which is jointly offered by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Business Administration.

He came to Memorial from Dalhousie University where he was associate professor of history and taught in the areas of maritime labour history, the history of fisheries and Canadian history.

“I thank Dr. Cadigan for taking on this important acting role,” said Dr. Noreen Golfman, provost and vice-president (academic) pro tempore. “We will indeed benefit from his strong leadership skills and significant academic experience.” 

Dr. Cadigan comes to the associate vice-president, faculty affairs role with bargaining unit and academic administration experience. He has served on the Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty Association bargaining team and, most recently, as acting associate dean (research and graduate studies) in the Faculty of Arts.

He holds a bachelor of arts (honours) in history and a PhD from Memorial University, and a master of arts in history from Queen’s University.

Reporting to the provost and vice-president (academic), the associate vice-president (academic), faculty affairs, provides leadership in all areas pertaining to the employment relationship, working environment, career development and professional well-being of academic leaders, academic staff members and instructors.

Dr. Cadigan will serve in the role until a search for a permanent associate vice-president (academic), faculty affairs has been successfully completed or until Dec. 31, 2015. He replaces Morgan Cooper who was recently appointed Memorial’s new general counsel.
