Become a medical student for six weeks

By Virginia Middleton | March 24, 2015

Have you always wondered what it’s like to be a medical student? Now you can find out. People of all ages are invited to register for the Faculty of Medicine’s 2015 Mini-Med School, a six-week program running from April 1-May 6.

Come learn why exercise is brain food, about caring for a loved one with dementia, nutrition, breast cancer, osteoporosis and the many other topics that will be covered.

The annual program began in 2004 as an initiative to connect with the community and to help share the knowledge and expertise within the medical faculty. This program is ideal for anyone interested in learning more about health and medicine.

The educational sessions will talk place at the Faculty of Medicine’s lecture theatres at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. However, the sessions will be available via webinar for those who are unable to attend in person.

Each Wednesday evening for six weeks, two faculty members will present on areas related to health and medicine. The seminars explore the scientific basis of topical medical issues and are followed by a question and answer session. At the final session, graduates receive a certificate of completion and a graduation reception is held.

Attendees of all ages are encouraged to register, as past participants have ranged from high-school students who may be interested in medicine as a profession, to seniors with an interest in health and health-related topics.

The following are just some of the comments given by past program participants:

"The learning, it's always good to learn new things from experts in a way I don't think I would have learnt anywhere else like the Internet."

"Such excellent speakers. I've been so impressed."

"Loved the format - lecture and opportunity for questions."

"Excellent presentations and conveyed in an understanding way."

Anyone interested in participating in Mini-Med School should register as soon as possible.

Due to the popularity of the program, space is limited and registration will occur on a first-come basis. The cost of the program is $129 for adults ($145.77 tax included) and $75 for seniors/students ($84.75 tax included).
