Proud Memorial graduates
“I am absolutely overwhelmed to be receiving this honour,” Ms. Rowe said after a joyous standing ovation. “I am a proud Newfoundlander and I am a very proud Memorial graduate and as we all know this is a very special place. My memories here, of my years at Memorial, are many and they are very fond and this honour and seeing old friends here tonight makes this very special.”

Fellow business graduate Mr. Crosbie said he was humbled by the recognition. He highlighted Memorial’s significance to Newfoundland and Labrador as well as the work of fellow alumni, during his acceptance speech.

“Memorial is perhaps the most important institution in the province,” he noted. “It has a pivotal role in shaping the future of the province and that of the students. There are so many of Memorial’s graduates having a huge impact around the world. It is just amazing what many of these folks are achieving.”

Mr. O’Brien said his award “validated,” his career choice. He singled out the support of both his mother and wife, actress Georgina Reilly.

“My mother is here tonight and I’ve never had an opportunity to thank you, Mom, for everything that you’ve done. I love you more than anything in the world,” he proudly told the crowd before thanking his wife.

“You are the backbone of every decision I make personally, professionally, socially, what appetizer I’m going to get before dinner. I love you with all my heart. I feel lucky to spend every day with you – even though I’m super successful,” he added jokingly, which was followed by a boisterous round of applause.

Meanwhile, Mr. Maddox, who was unable to be at the ceremony, was acknowledged for his tireless volunteer work and municipal leadership.

His nominator, Maurice Lewis, a fellow alumnus, accepted the award on his behalf.

“As a community member who supports and admires Tom’s contributions to his community and the area in general, I am honoured to accept this award,” he said.

The ceremony was hosted by President Kachanoski and emceed by alumna and entertainer Sheila Williams, B.Mus.Ed.’06.
