Business Families Forum tackles tough subjects

By Aimee Sheppard | June 9, 2005

On Wednesday, June 15, former Telemedia moguls and local family business practitioners will share stories and best practices in managing a family business at the launch of Memorial's Business Families Centre.

Recognizing the challenges that family-run businesses face, Memorial University's P. J. Gardiner Institute will launch a Business Families Centre with a half-day forum to be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m on June 15.

Sessions will be held throughout the morning on family business topics including succession, governance, conflict resolution, and human resources. Business families and professional advisors are encouraged to attend.

Luncheon keynote speakers are Philippe and Nan-b de Gaspé Beaubien, former owners and operators of Telemedia Inc., a privately owned media and communications company started in Montreal. The de Gaspé Beaubiens are well known for their expertise in the area of family business education, and in 1993, founded the Business Families Foundation.

The Business Families Centre is a source of information on family business development, governance, gender leadership, and entrepreneurship. The Centre will be the provincial focal point for those interested in advice, research, training and information on family-owned business.

The event will be held on the fourth floor of the Business Administration Building on Memorial's St. John's campus. The $150 fee includes a continental breakfast, nutrition break, lunch and on-campus parking. To register or for more information contact Cathy Miller at Memorial's P.J. Gardiner Institute by calling (709) 737-8883 or e-mailing cmiller@mun.ca.
