Lord Rothermere visits Memorial
Jonathan Harmsworth, 4th Viscount Rothermere, and his uncle, Maj. Vyvyan Harmsworth, recently stopped at Memorial University as part of their visit to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Their family has a strong connection to this province. Lord Jonathan Rothermere is the great-grandson of Harold Harmsworth who, along with his brother Alfred, founded the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, which built the pulp and paper mill in Grand Falls-Windsor. They also founded Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.
The Harmsworth family also has a long distinguished relationship with Memorial University. Alfred became Viscount Northcliffe in 1905 and Harold became Viscount Rothermere in 1914, and was also father of Esmond Harmsworth, second Viscount Rothermere who became Memorial University's first chancellor in 1952.
Today, Maj. Harmsworth is one of three trustees of the Rothermere Trust which disburses one of the most prestigious and lucrative scholarships offered by Memorial. Every year, the Rothermere Fellowship helps fund graduate work for a Memorial student at a British university.
During a recent luncheon in their honour, attended by past recipients of the Rothermere Fellowship, Lord Rothermere announced the creation of a new bursary for a Central Newfoundland student to study at Memorial's Harlow campus for three months. The value of the scholarship is 5,000 pounds.
Maj. Harmsworth and Lord Rothermere also visited Grand Falls-Windsor to commemorate the community's Centennial Celebrations this year.
