Field House showing gold medal match

Feb. 23, 2006

Memorial alumnus Brad Gushue and his rink, which includes another Memorial alumnus, Mark Nichols, B.Kn.'05 (honours), will compete in the gold medal game on Friday at 1 p.m. Newfoundland time.

The Alumni Association and The Works will be playing the gold medal match at 1 p.m. in the Field House on a big screen TV. There is no admission charge to watch the match at the Field House and the canteen will be open, serving pizza, hot dogs, coffee and soft drinks.

The match will see the team in a shoot out against Markku Uusipaavalniemi of Finland. The Gushue team comes to the game after a convincing 11-5 victory over the United States in the semi-final game.

Twenty-five year old Mr. Gushue, who graduated from Memorial with a bachelor of business administration in 2004, is the youngest Canadian skip ever to lead a curling team to the Olympics since it became a medal sport in 1998.

Based in the St. John's Curling Club, Brad Gushue's team includes Mr. Nichols, Jamie Korab, veteran Russ Howard and Mike Adam. Team coach Toby MacDonald is also an alumnus, graduating from Memorial's arts program in 1972.

Dr. Bas Kavanagh of the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation is a team advisor.

Attendees at the Field House event are asked to wear red and white to support the team.
