Oct. 28, 2008

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating a threat against a professor working at Memorial University of Newfoundland’s St. John’s campus.

Shortly before 9 a.m. today the RNC was advised of an internet posting that indicated a threat against a specific professor of Memorial and an indication the threat would be carried out on campus today.

An immediate police investigation was launched and officials with Memorial University were notified. The RNC set up an investigation team and Memorial University established its Crisis Management Team, with the RNC providing ongoing liaison for a coordinated response.

Based on a threat assessment conducted with the RNC, the individual under threat was quickly located and their safety secured. Additionally, the RNC dispatched officers to the campus to investigate the threat. Special security precautions appropriate to the circumstances were taken, including the cancellation of classes in the location cited in the threat.

In a short time it was determined the threat originated early this morning from a computer on campus. A number of users were identified and efforts were made to locate them and identify the person responsible.

The time of the threat has passed without incident. Police are interviewing persons of interest and the investigation is continuing.
