Hazmat team called to St. John's campus

Nov. 16, 2008

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team was called to the St. John’s campus at about 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16 after a Campus Enforcement and Patrol (CEP) officer noticed a small amount of white granular material by the side of a campus roadway adjacent to the Chemistry and Biotechnology Buildings. The material was visibly emitting a gaseous vapour.

CEP notified the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the fire department who in turn called in the hazmat team. The fire department was not able to identify the substance and, as a precautionary measure, sealed it in a triple-sealed safety container. The university will have the material disposed of by a chemical disposal company. There were no injuries and campus activities are not affected by the incident.
