Students aim to raise $6,000 for literacy

By Jeff Green | Jan. 16, 2009

For the next 10 days, Megan Earle and Maggie Peyton will be familiar faces to those heading to Memorial's Queen Elizabeth II Library.

The two energetic students are camping out -- literally -- in the lobby of the busy building.

They took up their temporary residence at 2:30 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 16, as part of a national fundraiser known as Live-in for Literacy. Their goal is to raise $6,000 to help build libraries in India.

Until Jan. 26, the pair will eat, sleep, study and relax all within a small section of space, only being allowed out for a five-minute break each hour.

Their entire movements will be recorded live on a webcam 24 hours a day, to be viewed around the globe.

Both Ms. Peyton, an Arts student, and Ms. Earle, a pre-social work student, are volunteers with the group Students for Literacy @ MUN.

Memorial is just one of seven universities from across the country taking part in this year’s fundraiser.

The pair will be accepting donations from students, staff and faculty as well as the wider community, for their cause.

More information about L ive-in for Literacy 2009 is available online, or people can drop by the QE II Library anytime until 2:30 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 26.

To make a donation to the cause, you can also call 737-3111.
