Macleans ranks

Nov. 6, 2009

Memorial University’s rankings in an annual national survey show little change from 2008. Macleans magazine ranks Canadian post-secondary institutions on a range of factors in six broad areas. Comprehensive universities like Memorial are ranked on 13 performance measures. Like last year, Memorial was fifth in the comprehensive university category in 2009.

Memorial did well in rankings of its total library expenditures, library holdings per student, student faculty ratio and operating budget.
Of the 13 indicators they now use for the rankings, eight remained unchanged from 2008.

According to the magazine, the 11 universities in the comprehensive category have a significant amount of research activity and a wide range of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including professional degrees.

Macleans used data from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and from the Canadian Undergraduate Survey Consortium to add a student perspective to their university ranking edition. Memorial did not participate in NSSE survey until 2008 and this is the first year that the university’s rankings reflect the results of that survey.

Memorial NSSE results compared quite favourably to other comprehensive universities.

The university was ranked third among senior students who were asked “Are you happy with your university education?”

When they were asked “Would you go back to school at your university” senior students at Memorial had the second highest number of positive responses among comprehensive universities.

The rankings were published in the Nov. 16 edition of Macleans magazine.
