By Meaghan Whelan | Dec. 7, 2009

Two exceptional MUN  grads were recognized last week by the Globe and Mail in their Report on Top 100 Women. Wendy Hannam, executive vice president, sales and service, products and marketing and international banking with Scotiabank and Heather Tulk, senior vice-president, customer solutions with Bell Aliant, Halifax, are Faculty of Business Administration alumna.

Ms. Hannam graduated with honours from Memorial’s Bachelor of Commerce (co-op) program in 1982. After earning her MBA from the University in Toronto in 1983, she began working with Scotiabank. She has held progressively senior positions throughout her career. Ms. Hannam is now responsible for retail banking strategy, channel optimization, sales and service design and executive and marketing and product management for international banking. She is also active in her community, serving as director of the Canadian Club and of the Toronto Children’s chorus.

Ms. Tulk graduated with honours from the bachelor of commerce (co-op) program in 1992 and went on to earn an MBA at Queen’s. In 1994, she started working with NewTel and she is now the senior vice-president of customer solutions with Bell Aliant in Halifax, where she leads all aspects of marketing, sales and contact centre operations. In 2003, Ms. Tulk was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40 and she is a Leadership Foundation Fellow of the International Women’s Forum.

Dr. Dale Foster is acting dean of the Faculty of Business Administration. She said that the inclusion of Ms. Hannam and Ms. Tulk is a notable achievement. “I am delighted to see Wendy and Heather included in the Top 100 Women. It is so rewarding to see our business graduates rise to senior management positions; it speaks not only to their personal success and dedication but also to the quality of our business programs. Recognition by the Globe and Mail is a testament to Wendy and Heather’s leadership skills and dedication and I agree that they are deserving recipients of this distinction.”

Honorees are chosen for the list by an independent advisory board under the direction of WXN, a Toronto-based professional development agency for women executives. Women are chosen based on a selection criterion that includes community service, vision and leadership, as well as role model potential. There are eight categories to represent leadership from different fields. Ms. Hannam and Ms. Tulk were both recognized in the corporate executives’ category, which recognizes women in senior positions in Canada’s publically traded or private companies.
