Committee named to find next vice-president, Corner Brook

July 26, 2010

Members have been named to the committee that will recruit Memorial’s first vice-president (Corner Brook). Formerly titled principal of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College (SWGC), the position has been filled in an acting capacity by Dr. Holly Pike since early 2008.

Dr. Gary Kachanoski, Memorial’s new president, is chairing the committee, which includes faculty, staff and students.

“Finding a new leader for Grenfell College who will work with our team to grow the Corner Brook campus as a vital and integral part of Memorial University is one of my top priorities,” said Dr. Kachanoski.

The representatives chosen for the search committee from faculty are Dr. James Duffy, Psychology-SWGC; Dr. Ross Klein, Social Work; Dr. Robert Gallant, Mathematics-SWGC; Dr. Judith McFetridge-Durdle, Nursing; Prof. Julie Pitcher, Business-SWGC; Dr. Olaf Janzen, Historical Studies-SWGC; and Prof. Marlene MacCallum, Visual Arts-SWGC.

Appointed from staff are Jo-Anne Philpott, Community Education and College Relations-SWGC, and Kent Decker, vice-president (finance and administration).

The student representatives are Terry Randell, SWGC, and Brad Evoy.

Dr. Pike wished the committee members well in their work in finding her successor. “I have every confidence that they will find the right person to lead Grenfell through the next phase of its development,” she said.

To facilitate its work, the committee has contracted the services of Janet Wright and Associates, one of the country’s top higher education executive search firms.

Dr. Kachanoski advised that the committee is expected to hold its first meeting in the coming weeks. He added that the search will be extensive and that he expects it to continue into the late fall.

As the search for the vice-president (Corner Brook) unfolds, information will be available at www.mun.ca/president/VPCBsearch.php.
