Stocked pantry

If stocking the shelves of Memorial’s Campus Food Bank was the goal, then the annual 12 Days of Giving food drive was a resounding success.

Due to the collective effort of numerous faculty members, staff and students, more than 4,000 food items are now on hand to distribute to those who are in need of a nutritious meal.

During the fifth annual “Christmas in July” event, tins, bottles and boxes poured in according to the 12 Days of Christmas theme, where each Memorial unit earned points for certain items. Bonus points were awarded for collecting the requested amount per day.

The goal of the fundraiser was to collect non-perishable food items such as bags of sugar, bottles of pasta sauce or tins of tuna fish during the summer season when giving may not be on the forefront of people’s minds.

In typical form, the Memorial community outdid itself again this year. The Department of Biochemistry claimed top honours for most points earned (Biochemistry was also first in points last year and the previous year). Computing and Communications came in second place, Human Resources ranked third, Facilities Management came in fourth and the QEII library came in fifth.

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Education was recognized for highest per capita points based on participant numbers in their office. The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science came in second place for per capita participation, the School of Pharmacy came in third, Faculty Relations was fourth and the Math Learning Centre rounded out the winners in fifth place.

As a reward for all their efforts, coffee break treats will be served up to the first place winners.
