The Based in Business camp is in full swing in the Faculty of Business Administration, thanks to the efforts of student group SIFE Memorial.
In its second year, this program is helping Canadian Forces Members, who have an entrepreneurial venture or idea, gain valuable business skills to make their venture sustainable. Throughout the day professors from the Faculty of Business Administration give their time to teaching the participants. In the evening SIFE volunteers work with the Canadian Forces participants to apply what they learned to their personal business.
"I see the Based in Business program as a natural fit for Memorial because of our history,” said Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor of Memorial University. “It’s another way we can continue to honour the memory of those for whom this university was founded, and I congratulate members of SIFE Memorial for bringing it to fruition."
Several university units, in particular the Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Engineering and the Gardiner Centre, have offered time, resources and expertise in an effort to create an exceptional experience for the Canadian Forces members. The program is sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador, TD Bank and the Gardiner Centre.
"The SIFE Memorial team is excited and proud to work with our participants and help them transition to their new careers,” said Lynn Morrissey, assistant professor, Faculty of Business Administration, and faculty advisor to the SIFE Memorial Team. "The tremendous support we’ve received from our faculty, university and community is a testament to everyone's eagerness to give back to those who have served our country."
Currently there are nine participants at the Memorial University campus for the week-long training camp, where they are learning about entrepreneurship, accounting, marketing, finance, ethics and human resource management throughout the day. These sessions have been collaboratively designed and facilitated by SIFE volunteers and Memorial University professors. In the evening, SIFE volunteers will help participants research and write their business plans using the business plan model from TD Bank.
The participants will graduate from the program during a ceremony at Memorial on Aug. 14, but they will continue to be supported by mentors from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador (ICANL) and SIFE Memorial as they work to build their businesses.
