Gardiner Centre hosts project management symposium
More than 70 professional project managers attended The Project Management (PM) Symposium 2010, held at the Capital Hotel in St. John’s recently.
Memorial’s Gardiner Centre and the Project Management Institute of Newfoundland and Labrador (PMINL) partnered to offer the Symposium, billing it as “an event designed for professional project managers looking to enhance their business skills, network with experts and learn about major city projects.”
Sponsored by xwave and Quality Matters, the PM Symposium allowed attendees to earn six Professional Development Units (PDUs) toward their Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Frank Saladis, world-leading project management expert and past president of the New York PMI chapter, delivered the keynote address and discussed coping with change in the workplace and the importance of professionalism in project management.
Jason Sinyard, manager of the City of St. John’s Waste Management Division, discussed the revamp of the city’s waste management strategy and the curbside recycling program. There was also a panel discussion on best practices in project management and the lifecycle of a Project Management Office.
Other experts at the symposium included Dr. Rob Shea, interim dean of Student Services at Memorial, who discussed leadership for a multigenerational workforce, while Lyle Wetsch, associate professor of marketing at Memorial’s Faculty of Business, presented on using social media to improve project management collaboration.
“All of the presentations were insightful and eye-opening. We had a large group of prestigious presenters and we thank them all for contributing to the success of the symposium,” said Brian Hurley, director of the Gardiner Centre.
