Global Cinema Series in action for winter 2012 semester
After a brief hiatus in fall 2011, the popular Global Cinema Series, co-sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and the Division of Lifelong Learning, is back on track for the winter 2012 semester.
Now co-curated by Dr. John Buffinga and Dr. Maria Mayr of the Department of German and Russian (Dr. Buffinga is also the co-ordinator of the film studies minor program), the four-year-old series kicks off on Tuesday, Jan. 31, with a screening of the German film, The Wave (Die Welle, 2008).
Films will continue to be presented by Faculty of Arts faculty members, a value-added initiative that makes this film series unique, according to Dr. Buffinga.
“It’s a film series that is at once informal and informed,” said Dr. Buffinga. “Audience members can enjoy the films and also get the added bonus of participating in a discussion moderated by someone who is an expert in the film’s subject matter.”
Drs. Buffinga and Mayr have also instituted a new student admission price of $5 per film.
The Global Cinema Series takes place in A-1046 and films are screened at 7 p.m. Tickets ($8 general admission) can be purchased at the door. General audiences can register for all five films for $35 at http://mun.augusoft.net/index.cfm?fuseaction=1010&#. For a full schedule please see www.mun.ca/arts/alumni/globalcinema.php.
