Memorial University awards food services contract

Aramark Canada Ltd. has been named as the preferred supplier for food services for Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.

On March 14 the Board of Regents accepted the University Food Service Committee recommendation that services for residence dining, retail and catering be awarded to Aramark, pending negotiations of a final contract.

Aramark will assume the collective agreement currently in place, meaning that all terms and conditions of employment for unionized workers will remain the same.

The contract begins May 1, 2013, and runs until 2018, with the possibility of renewal for a further five-year term.

“Prior to issuing the request for proposals in November 2012, we held focus groups and consulted widely, particularly with students and housing residents, and student representatives who served on the food service committee,” said Kent Decker, vice-president (administration and finance), Memorial University. “The food service proposal we have accepted will best meet the nutritional requirements, cultural needs and tastes of our increasingly diverse campus population and enhance accessibility and choice in the provision of catering and conferencing services.”

In addition to food services at student residences on Memorial’s main campus, the proposal includes the provision of services to five cafeterias and kiosks across campuses. It does not include the University Centre.

Further details will be available once final contract terms have been negotiated with Aramark.
