Calling all disaster chefs at Memorial

By Mandy Cook | April 16, 2014

The Office of Emergency Management is challenging all faculty, staff and students at Memorial to call on their culinary skills to create an original recipe using only non-perishable food items and a camp stove.

The Disaster Chef Challenge is part of an Emergency Preparedness Fair the office is hosting in The Landing, University Centre, on Friday, May 16.

“The Disaster Chef Challenge is meant to raise awareness about personal emergency preparedness,” said Holly Tobin, emergency management analyst at Memorial. “It’s a fun way to engage with our campus community and teach preparedness at the same time. We’re excited to see our staff, faculty and students’ creativity shine through with the recipes.”

Three finalists will be selected from all recipes submitted by Monday, May 5, and given the opportunity to prepare their dish for a panel of judges during the fair. The Disaster Chef Challenge winner will take home a 16GB iPad with retina display and an emergency preparedness kit.

In addition to the Disaster Chef Challenge, the Emergency Preparedness Fair will feature demonstrations by some of Memorial’s emergency preparedness partners, such as the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, and provide information about what individuals can do when an emergency strikes. The fair will educate the campus community about pertinent emergency preparedness initiatives and about the roles different organizations play during emergency response. Organizations on the municipal, provincial and federal levels and well as non-governmental organizations that are involved in emergency response will be participating in the fair.

The Emergency Preparedness Fair will take place from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Friday, May 16.
