Celebrating the university experience during MUNdays 2014

By Mandy Cook | Oct. 20, 2014

Memorial University will kick up its collective heels during its annual week-long fall celebrations, MUNdays.

From Oct. 23-28 on the St. John’s and Marine Institute campuses and Oct. 24-29 at Grenfell Campus, there will be fun galore, whether it’s getting stuffed at the syrupy Pancake Breakfast, singing along with the all-star lineup at the Super TSC Night Concert, taking on all comers in a glow-in-the-dark race, getting a serious sugar rush at a candy buffet or sailing away on the west coast’s beautiful Bonne Bay.

A full itinerary of events and activities is planned, encouraging students, staff, faculty and alumni to come together and celebrate spirit at Memorial. There will also be lots of weekend events to ensure everyone gets a chance to kick back and enjoy the university experience!

Be sure to follow along in the fun on the MUNdays Twitter feed @ilovemundays with the #MUNdays2014 hashtag and the Facebook page at I Love MUNdays.

MUNdays highlights the diversity, ingenuity, excellence, kindness and community spirit that set Memorial apart from all other post-secondary education institutions.

St. John’s campus

Stack ’em high! The six-day schedule of events kicks off in St. John’s on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 7:30-9:15 a.m. with a campus-wide Pancake Breakfast. Come get tasty breakfast treats at the Main Dining Hall! A non-perishable food item is all it costs to get in. Don’t forget to register at www.mun.ca/mundays.

Once everyone is full, the Official Launch of MUNdays happens at 9:15 a.m.,followedbythe Spirit Parade at 9:30 a.m. Leave the Main Dining Hall and join in this energetic march around campus and wave a flag, hoot and holler, represent your house, club, society or faculty . . . or just show some general spirit, loudly! The most spirited group gets $1,000! Will longstanding Spirit Parade champions, the Pakistani Student Association, take top honours again this year? Don’t forget to register at www.mun.ca/mundays.

On Friday, Oct. 24, it’s Kindness Friday, just because it feels good! The location is anywhere and everywhere and the concept is simple: students, staff, faculty, alumni and retirees are invited to show their kindness to and appreciation of one another, the community or the environment. Give a cookie. Donate clothing. Pick up litter. The sky’s the limit! You can register your own kindness idea at www.mun.ca/mundays or join in with groups who have already registered.

Also on Friday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., you can show your kindness to the community by participating in the campus-wide Kindness Friday initiative, Fill-the-Square! Help fill the basketball court at Paton College with non-perishable food items to benefit the Campus Food Bank. Full bellies make for happy hearts!

And this afternoon and this evening, Friday, Oct. 24, many class and faculty reunions take place. From on-campus locations to some of the capital city’s most inviting pubs and clubs, hundreds of Memorial alumni will gather to reconnect and reflect on their university years together. Visit www.mun.ca/mundays/alumni for all your schedule and ticket needs.

If cheering from the sidelines is more your thing, get out and support the Sea-Hawks men's volleyball teams as they compete against teams from the Quebec Student Sports Network (RSEQ) and the Atlantic University Sport conferences in an interlock tournament to kick off the 2014-15 volleyball season. Games start on Friday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Field House; Memorial takes on the University of Sherbrooke at 8 p.m. Wear your red and support our home team! Go Sea-Hawks! Visit www.mun.ca/mundays to see the full schedule and for ticket information.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, the volleyball competition continues as the men’s Sea-Hawks take to the court at the Field House. Memorial plays Laval University at 1 p.m. and the University of Montreal at 8 p.m. Red means go!

All day long on Saturday, Oct. 25, the Community Service Learning event will take place at various locations. It’s your chance to give back to the world, and you’ve got options. Help out wherever you like: collect clothes for a women’s shelter, plant seedlings in a local waste space, play a few hands of cards at a senior’s home. Do some good and feel good!

Also today, Saturday, Oct. 25, the Barnes House Charity Truck Pull is back! After a brief hiatus, this massive feat of strength happens from 12-5 p.m. in lot 16/16A. This MUNdays crowd pleaser raises money and awareness for Iris Kirby House.

Also today, Saturday, Oct. 25, a special reunion is taking place: The Muse 65th Anniversary Reunion will see former and current Musers reconnect and share Muse memories over food, beverages, and birthday cake at the University Centre, UC-2002, from 5-8 p.m. Newspaper staffers will peruse archives, look through old photos and celebrate this milestone in The Muse’s history. Don’t forget to register at www.mun.ca/mundays/alumni!

Tonight, Saturday, Oct. 25, a party is goin’ on! It’ll be a rockin’ good time at The Breezeway bar in the University Centre as you join hundreds of other alumni at the Super TSC Night Concert. Relive your memories of former concerts and parties held in the revered Thomson Student Centre (TSC) and dance into the wee hours. Hosted by up-and-coming local comedian Matt Wright, the concert features an all-star lineup with performances by Mick Davis, Barry Canning, and Shanneyganock. Alumni and friends are all invited! Doors open at 7 p.m.; show starts at 8 p.m. Get your tickets here: http://etixnow.com/events/super-tsc-oct-25.

On Sunday, Oct. 26, lace up your skates and join us for Memorial’s first ever MUNdays Sunday Skate. Alumni, students, faculty and staff and friends of the university, along with their families, are invited to head down to the Jack Byrne Arena from 4-5 p.m. for an hour of skating followed by refreshments and munchies. Get out on the ice and get your heart pumping!

Also today, Sunday, Oct 26, the President’s Golden Celebration will see Dr. Gary Kachanoski host a special celebration recognizing alumni celebrating 50 years of graduation from the Parade Street and Elizabeth Avenue campuses. This event is by invitation only for alumni marking 50 years of graduation and their guests. The target year is 1964 and a select group who were not invited in 2013. Space is limited. To ensure you are on the invitation listing, email reunion@mun.ca.

On Monday, Oct. 27, it’s MUNday, all day! Wear your university pride with some MUN-branded clothing. Don’t have a hoodie with a MUN logo? Good news: the MUN Bookstore is offering a 20 per cent discount from Oct. 21-28! So go ahead, nab yourself something new and spirit-friendly.

Also today, Monday, Oct. 27, the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is on from 1-3:30 p.m. at The Landing, University Centre! Graduate students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. The condensed time frame challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be communicated to general audiences. The top three competitors will take home some great prizes – the winner nabs $500 and moves on to the eastern regional leg of this prestigious international competition! Watch, learn and root for your favourite researcher. Participants must register at www.mun.ca/sgs/3MT/index.php.

And on Monday, Oct. 27, from 6-9 p.m. in The Landing, University Centre, A Menu for Success: Dining Etiquette in the Professional World will answer all your burning etiquette questions like: Why are there so many forks? Whose bread plate is that? You'll get answers to these questions plus many more. Enjoy a delicious three-course meal and network with alumni and students at this fun and informative event. Vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options available upon request. Don’t forget to register at www.mun.ca/mundays!

Tuesday, Oct. 28, is the last day of MUNdays for 2014. No worries, though, there’ll be so much to do, it’ll keep you warm and fuzzy until next year. Please open your hearts and closets to help Memorial's neighbour, MacMorran Community Centre, by donating gently used winter clothing for adults and children. For your donation, you'll receive a cozy I ♥ Touque Day hat. Drop items off at ED-2000 and ED-1032 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Also today, Tuesday, Oct. 28, the university-wide Health Challenge is on. Come to the Field House from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and put your heart to good work. Get those feet moving so we can break our record of laps around the track again this year! In 2013, the final tally came in at 5,424 laps, which shattered the 2012 record of 4,775. Prizes will be given out for top effort!

Also, today, Tuesday, Oct. 28, take a well-deserved break from all the physical activity and drop into the University Centre (UC) food court for the UC Lounge. Relax, kick back in one of the comfy couches and enjoy some live tunes by local DJs and, who knows, you might even win a prize or pick up some funky MUNdays swag. Don’t miss it, though! The UC Lounge takes place 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Sadly, MUNdays 2014 comes to an end at 2 p.m. in the University Centre. The Official Closing Ceremonies will be where we say goodbye to Memorial’s fun-filled spirit week for another year. Don’t worry though: revealing the winners of the week-long Spirit Award Challenge (worth $1,000!) and the Instagram Photo Challenge (a total of $1,700 is up for grabs!) will help ease the pain. Don’t forget to register for both challenges at www.mun.ca/mundays!

Happy MUNdays, everyone!
