Tricks and treats with Grenfell science

By Melanie Callahan | Oct. 20, 2014

Trick-or-treating will take on a whole new meaning this Halloween at Grenfell Campus.

While on campus, children aged six-12 and their parents/guardians will be invited to trick-or-treat among science stations. At each station, they will participate in a short, hands-on science activity and receive candy. Some of the station activities include slime-making chemistry, digging for fossils, building a skeleton, examining illusions, and learning to do mathematical magic tricks.

“Station hosts have been encouraged to come up with activities that demonstrate a surprising or tricky aspect of science,” said Dr. Erin Fraser and Dr. Rebecca Milley, faculty members in biology and math at Grenfell Campus, and two of the event organizers. “This event is about making science fun, interesting and accessible to children. It’s also an opportunity to showcase the wide range of scientific disciplines and research happening at Grenfell Campus.”

The free drop-in event will take place Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 6-9 p.m. in the Arts and Science Extension Atrium at Grenfell Campus. All are welcome. Costumes are encouraged, and a prize will be awarded for the best costume.
