Update on water quality on St. John's campus, Friday, Aug. 28

Aug. 28, 2015

As part of Memorial’s ongoing water quality testing and remediation, fire hydrants will be flushed in the areas of the Biotechnology, Chemistry-Physics, Computing Services buildings and the Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Library. Flushing is intended to remove sediment that may be in the university water mains. The hydrant flushing will take place on Saturday, Aug. 29, to avoid disruption to the university community. While flushing is taking place water pressure may be diminished and there may be discolouration, but the buildings will be open for regular operations. A map of the hydrants to be flushed is available online: http://www.mun.ca/health_safety/hydrant_locations.jpg.

On Sunday, Aug. 30, water service entrances and potable water fixtures will be flushed. Screens and aerators, both of which capture particulate, will be cleaned in the following order: QEII Library, Chemistry-Physics, Biotechnology and Computing Services.

When the flushing has been completed, further water samples will be taken. This will require allowing the water to stagnate for 8-24 hours. It is expected this sampling will take place on Sept. 3 and 4, with locations to be determined.
