Monday, July 14, 2014, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Junior Common Room, R. Gushue Hall

Panel I features: Luke Flanagan (University of Edinburgh) "Knights of Columbus in WWI"; Terry Bishop Sterling (Memorial) "NL Women in the voluntary aid detachment in WWI"; Luke Ashworth (Memorial) "Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) interwar period. This conference brings scholars from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States who research various non-state groups that influence armed conflict and peace processes. The groups examined include those that use violent means, such as terrorists, mercenaries, and foreign fighters, as well as those who use non-violent means, such as mediators, humanitarian organizations, and peace activists. This array of actors have never been compared and contrasted to each other. Doing so allows a clearer picture of how warfare and peacebuilding processes have evolved since WWI and are conducted in an increasingly globalized world, where non-state groups are gaining increased prominence and relevance.
