Transnational Civil Society and Local Political Dynamics

Monday, July 14, 2014, 2-4 p.m.
Junior Common Room, R. Gushue Hall

Panel II features Catia Confortini (Wellesley), Miriam Anderson (Memorial) and Jennifer Brinkerhoff (George Washington University). The Transnational Actors in War and Peace Conference brings scholars from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States who research various non-state groups that influence armed conflict and peace processes. The groups examined include those that use violent means, such as terrorists, mercenaries, and foreign fighters, as well as those who use non-violent means, such as mediators, humanitarian organizations, and peace activists. This array of actors have never been compared and contrasted to each other. Doing so allows a clearer picture of how warfare and peacebuilding processes have evolved since WWI and are conducted in an increasingly globalized world, where non-state groups are gaining increased prominence and relevance. The conference is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Connection Grant, Memorial's Scholarship for the Arts, School of Graduate Studies, Conference Fund, Dean of Arts Office, Arts on Violence Fund, WW100 Commemoration Committee, Career Experience Program and the Canadian Department of Public Safety's Kanishka Project.
