English as a Second Language: What Do They Hear?

Thursday, Nov. 06, 2014, 2-3:30 p.m.
ED-2030B

There are features of spoken English that cause comprehension problems for second language learners.  In this session, participants will learn how to recognize problematic features of spoken English and how this knowledge can help create a more positive classroom experience for non-native English speakers.

After completing this learning experience, participants will be able to:
• identify aspects of spoken English which can cause listening comprehension problems for non-native English speakers (NNESs).
• describe the listening process.
• modify their speech patterns to make them more comprehensible to NNESs.
• apply this knowledge to their teaching to create a more comprehensible lecture for NNESs.
