Recovering Labrador’s First Snowmobile

Thursday, March 19, 2015, 7-9 p.m.
Room 250, Labrador Institute, 219 Hamilton River Rd. Happy Valley-Goose Bay

The oldest snowmobile is Labrador is being restored to working condition and will one day be driven on the Labrador coast as it did 100 years ago.

Join Memorial graduate Jamie Brake, an archaeologist in Nunatsiavut, for a special presentation where you’ll learn more about the historic Ford Model T unearthed in Labrador.

The machine was used by a group of American scientists during an expedition to Labrador in 1927. When they travelled to Labrador, they took a modification kit with them, allowing the explorers to remove the front two tires of the truck and add them to the back. They also attached two skis to the front, allowing the Model T Ford to glide over snow and ice, travelling the Labrador coast, carrying wood, supplies and people.

Mr. Brake’s presentation will include journal entries, photographs and even silent film footage.

All are welcome for this evening of history and heritage. A reception will follow.
