Workshop: Design As Social Critique

Tuesday, March 17, 2015, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
SN-2025

What can designing robotic dogs reveal about political issues around environmental degradation? Why would someone design a ring out of artificially cultured human bone? We typically think about design simply as a method for creating consumer products. But there is a growing movement to use design as a means to embody, communicate, and further develop critical thought about social issues. In this workshop, I'll give an overview of how artists, designers, and social activists are adapting design methods to give new perspectives on how the world is and could be. We'll work together to develop conceptual designs provoking reflection on issues we care about. No prior design skill expected or required. Led by sociology visiting scholar Dr. Phoebe Sengers.
