Between Mobility and Attachment of Mobile Workers in Newfoundland and Labrador and in Alberta
Drawing from on-going research with workers and their families in the Southern Shore of Newfoundland and in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Sandrine Jean explores housing choices, work related mobility and home-work balance among Newfoundland and Labrador families engaged in mobile work, whether it is short distance commute to long-distance and fly-in/fly-out. The preliminary research findings considers the practices of home and of home-making and the experiences of balancing home and work lives balance, either when at home or away from home. She will reflect on the ways in which daily lives and attachment to place and to housing are affected by employment-related geographical mobility. The challenges of doing research in the oil sands and in work camp settings will be discussed.
