The master of employment relations (MER) program will host the next session of its work and employment speaker series.

Join us for Employment and Poverty Dynamics among Vulnerable Groups in Canada: Longitudinal Analysis Based on SLID 1993-2010.

Dr. Tony Fang from the economics department will speak about the growing concern over income equality in Canada and the importance of having information about the transitions into and out of poverty, as well as the extent to which individuals are vulnerable to being persistently trapped in poverty.

Using five panels of the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) from 1993-2010, Dr. Fang will present his paper that documents the long-term trends of poverty dynamics in six vulnerable groups: Aboriginal persons, new immigrants, lone parents, persons with disabilities, unattached persons ages 45-64 living on their own and youths ages 20-24 who are not in school. He'll look at the main determinants of their transitions into and out of poverty status as well as potential policy initiatives that may be relevant for each of these vulnerable groups.

The MER program is jointly offered by the faculties of Arts and Business Administration.
