It was the first geological map of a large region, with detailed stratigraphy, and so represented a milestone in the development of geology as a science: In the words of renowned author, Simon Winchester, this is "The Map that Changed the World." There will be a display of an original copy of the map in the possession of Memorial University, and we will hear from Tom Sharpe about surveyor William Smith, the history of the map and related controversies involving the Geological Society.  The display is starting at 12:30 p.m., seminar presentation at 1 p.m.
