Dr. Cedric Brunelle, Department of Geography, will speak on the topic Using Spatial Micro-data.

Empirical studies looking at urban or regional analysis have so far largely relied on discrete conceptualizations of space and aggregated metrics, which do not take into consideration spatial heterogeneity and variability at the micro-level. While this observation is not entirely novel, the last five years have seen the emergence of a large number of studies offering new approaches to analyze regional dynamics from a micro perspective, imposing the conceptualization of spatial interactions in a continuous and multidirectional space. Based on recent empirical analyses of individual firms geocoded at fine geographical scales in Canada, this communication proposes to explore emerging theoretical and empirical fields of investigation based on spatial micro data, as well as related challenges. These methodological considerations are may be of increasing importance for public policies aiming at the development of cities, regions and other planned economic spaces.
