Rhodes scholar winner

Memorial University medical student Paul Boland has been named the latest Rhodes Scholar from Newfoundland and Labrador. The 23-year-old Corner Brook native also received the Governor General's Medal and the university's medal for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry. Mr. Boland plans to pursue a degree in cardiovascular research at the prestigious Oxford University. The Rhodes Scholarship has been awarded in Newfoundland since 1904 and Boland is the 98th nominee in the province. There were no nominees during the Second World War. Here, Mr. Boland (left) is pictured receiving the Surgery Prize in Anatomy from Dr. Paul Gardiner on Oct. 18 at the first scholarship and awards luncheon sponsored by the Faculty of Medicine.
